While in recent months our news has been infected by the implications of a well-known virus, May has seen the world of data privacy and protection get back on track somewhat, with lots of additional news.
 
Notable stories include legislative developments in Singapore, Shanghai and New York State. EasyJet reported a customer database compromised, affecting 9m records and resulting in an $18bn class action filed in the London High Court. Of specific interest to those organizations in denial about the legality of their cookie notices is a clarification from the EU that ‘Cookie Walls’ are illegal, and that browsing activity cannot constitute consent to their deployment.

Canada has fined Facebook $9m for making misleading privacy claims, not under the existing privacy laws but under the Competition Act.

Twelve regulatory authorities in the EU have published their enforcement priorities, which many readers will be interested to see continue to include big tech companies and adtech and direct marketing practices, including the practice of data broking.
